Two IPR faculty have been recognized by the analytics firm Clarivate as Highly Cited Researchers for 2024: IPR statistician Elizabeth Tipton and professor of medical social sciences David Cella, an IPR associate.

The designation recognizes researchers who rank in the top 1% of citations for their articles published in peer-reviewed scientific and social science journals each year from 2013-23. The data are collected from the company’s Web of Science, a scientific research and citation platform.

Calling them the “most influential researchers in the world,” Clarivate stresses that these scholars are “1 in 1,000” in terms of the world’s entire population of scientists. In all, 6,636 individuals received the designation in 2024, and 32 of them were Northwestern faculty members, including Tipton and Cella.

“Being named on the Highly Cited Researchers list is a testament not only to Beth and David’s individual research excellence, but also to the kind of leadership and collaboration that defines great scholarship,” said IPR Director Andrew Papachristos, the John G. Searle Professor of Sociology. “Their work is laying the foundation for countless other important studies around the world.”

Elizabeth Tipton

Named to the list for a second year in a row, Tipton has 65 publications, cited a total of 7,253 times, in the cross-field category. This category comprises researchers whose work has significant impact across multiple fields. Tipton’s research applies statistical methods to psychology and education to improve decision making in these areas and beyond. She focuses on finding ways to ensure studies apply to a wide range of people and settings, not just ideal conditions. Tipton also develops techniques for meta-analysis, or combining multiple studies, and sharing findings in clear and usable ways.

David Cella

Recognized in the social sciences category, Cella has 1,683 publications that have been cited more than 91,000 times. He has appeared on the Highly Cited Researchers list every year since 2015. He leads transdisciplinary collaborations to refine measures of health so that clinicians can better serve patients. A key component of his research involves making sure that patient voices are heard in clinical care and clinical research, and he has led the creation of many online and pen-and-paper instruments to collect such data.

Both Tipton and Cella also head up key centers at Northwestern to help advance their research aims. Tipton co-directs the Statistics for Evidence-Based Policy and Practice (STEPP) Center. STEPP uses statistical methods to analyze research evidence to improve policy and practice in the real world. As director of the Center for Patient-Centered Outcomes at the Institute for Public Health and Medicine, Cella advances research that integrates patients’ perspectives into health outcomes, improving clinical care and decision making.

Elizabeth Tipton is a professor of statistics and data science and an IPR fellow. David Cella is a professor of medical social sciences and an IPR associate.
